Marriott to open two EDITION hotels in Tokyo
Two new Marriott International hotels are due to open in Tokyo in 2020 as the company debuts its EDITION brand in Japan.
The announcement comes in the wake of Marriott International and Ian Schrager signing two separate agreements with Mori Trust Co., Ltd., the largest owner and franchisee of Marriott International hotels in Japan, for The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza and The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon.
The two distinctive luxury lifestyle hotels will mark the Japanese debut of the EDITION brand, a collection of one-of-a-kind hotels that redefine the codes of traditional luxury. Displaying the best of dining and entertainment, services and amenities “all under one roof’, each EDITION property is completely unique, reflecting the best of the cultural and social milieu of its location and of the time.
Conceived by Ian Schrager in a partnership with Marriott International, EDITION combines the personal, intimate, individualized experience that Schrager is known for, with the global reach, operational expertise and scale of Marriott.
The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza will be a newly-built 13-storey standalone property with 80 guestrooms. Located just off Chuo Street, the main shopping street in Ginza, the hotel site affords convenient access to Ginza-Itchome Station, Ginza Station and Tokyo Station, as well as shopping complexes, restaurants and tourist attractions such as Tokyo Imperial Palace. Construction is expected to start in May 2018, with an opening planned for March 2020.

The 200-key Tokyo EDITION Toranomon will be built as part of a redevelopment of the former Pastoral Building, a mixed-use project comprising offices, residences and a medical centre. Located in Minato ward, the hotel site is within walking distance of Kamiyacho and Roppongi-Itchome stations and a short drive from Toranomon and Tokyo stations. It is also just minutes from government offices, embassies and consulate, and cultural sites such as Akasaka Palace and Meiji Shrine. Site excavation work has started, with the hotel opening planned for 2020.
Anthony Capuano, executive vice president and global chief development office, Marriott International, said: “We are thrilled to sign two new EDITION hotels in Tokyo, Japan’s dynamic capital, where pulsing modernity meets vibrant customs, compelling cuisine and much more.
“Tokyo serves as the perfect setting for the EDITION brand, presenting the best of the world’s cultural and social milieu for travellers who seek exceptional places and experiences.”
Ian Schrager, chairman and chief executive officer of Ian Schrager Company, said: “Tokyo is one of the most sophisticated 24-hour gateway cities in the world. From art, culture, design, architecture, fashion, nightlife, shopping and international cuisine, the city is the perfect home for EDITION and we look forward to bringing our unique hotel offering to the city.”
