Tenerife beaches flagged as cleanest in Canaries
Tenerife has achieved an impressive 15 Blue Flags for its beaches – an increase of four since 2015 – in the annual Blue Flag Awards.
The latest results make Tenerife the most awarded of the Canary Islands, followed by Gran Canaria (12), Fuerteventura and Lanzarote (six each), La Palma (five) and La Gomera (one).
Among beaches winning Blue Flags awards were Las Vistas, Los Cristianos on the popular southern area of the island, Playa La Arena in Santiago del Teide – which has retained Blue Flag Status for nearly 30 years – and the popular Troya (I and II), Torviscas, El Duque and Fañabé in the Adeje municipality.
The Blue Flag awards are announced each year worldwide by the Foundation for Environmental Education across almost 50 countries. Attaining Blue Flag status is seen as the gold standard for beaches, which are judged on four categories: water quality, safety and services, environmental management, and environmental education and information.
