Zeavola Resort produces its own drinking water

Luxury property Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi has revealed that all drinking water in its guest rooms is now produced in the resort and provided in recyclable glass water bottles.

The new system means the Zeavola team have taken a major step forward in the sustainable operation of the resort in the island group in Thailand.

The Zeavola Resort is making its own water using a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. In order to ensure all year-round production, the capacity of the already installed RO system had to be increased. It was also necessary to install an additional RO system for a secondary cleaning process, to produce drinking water quality.

To complete the process a bottling plant together with required bottle washing facilities was installed.

Once the process was finished, Zeavola waited another 12 months to ensure that the water quantity and quality would comply with all necessary sustainable requirements.

After ensuring a consistent water quality and quantity the big day finally came earlier this month (August) and the water is now served in reusable bottles meeting all criteria for a resource saving operation.

Under the new system the resort will avoid the usage of about 95,000 plastic bottles per year, a move that will have a significant impact on the environment and the Phi Phi Island Marine National Park. It is also a major step towards a more sustainable operation of the Zeavola Resort.

Future steps include the implementation of further refilling stations for guests as well as in the restaurants and the activity centre.

• Look out for a special report on what resorts can – and are – doing to reduce the damaging impact of their operations on the local destination environment in the upcoming Q3/Q4 EMEA issue of RCI Ventures magazine.
