Flights double to Jordan winter hot spot of Aqaba

The Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Jordan Tourism Board have announced that flights to the country’s coastal city of Aqaba from the UK are to double from 29 October 2019.

The flights will operate on a winter seasonal schedule twice a week from London Gatwick until 28 March 2020.

The increase of the non-stop flights will provide UK holidaymakers with even better access to one of the Middle East’s most exciting destinations. Jordan welcomed more British travellers than ever in 2018 following the launch of the new direct easyJet flights from London Gatwick to Aqaba in August 2018, with visitor numbers increasing by 21 per cent compared to August 2018.

The launch of the new flights have attracted travellers to the south of Jordan, with the Red Sea resort of Aqaba rapidly becoming a popular winter sun getaway.

Growing adventure activities and tours, rapid development in Aqaba, and new cultural initiatives in the buzzing capital, Amman, have all helped to attract holidaymakers to explore Jordan beyond the well-known sites of Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea.

Attractive destination

The historic port city of Aqaba, located on the Red Sea’s Gulf boasts beaches, premier snorkelling and scuba diving, as well as access to Jordan’s south, where highlights include the famous ancient city of Petra and the spectacular desert landscapes of Wadi Rum.

Aqaba has been transformed in recent years with billion-dollar development in the new resorts of Ayla and Saraya Aqaba, which welcome holidaymakers with new four and five-star hotels, activity experiences, a marina, restaurants and beach clubs.

Average high temperatures reach above 20 degrees during the winter months, and additional developments including Jordan’s first 18-hole Championship Golf course, a professional-quality wake-boarding park, and the region’s first water park make Aqaba an ideal destination for winter fun in the sun.

Aqaba is located in the far south of Jordan, less than five hours flying time from the UK, with Aqaba International Airport is situated just 20 minutes from the city centre.

The red-rose city of Petra, one of the seven modern wonders of the world, is just a two-hour drive, making it an accessible day trip, while the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Wadi Rum is even closer, meaning travellers can combine relaxing days with exploring some of the world-famous experiences Jordan has to offer.
