Google Flights Adds New Features

There are now even more reasons for travelers to manage their trip with Google Flights.

Google Flights has rolled out two new features: delay predictions and a breakdown of Basic Economy fares. These additions to the search engine come on the heels of a December update, which included tips on when to book based on machine-learning algorithms and historical price data.

Historical data and machine learning enable Google to predict some delays even before they’re flagged by airlines, although a delay will be published only if Google is at least 80 percent confident in its prediction. (Travelers should still confirm with the airline.) Google Flights will also provide the reason for delays, such as weather or late aircraft arrival.

The second new feature will reveal what is and isn’t included in Basic Economy fares from select airlines. These lower fares typically come with varying restrictions and can be confusing. Both new features represent real-world applications of Google’s big-data capabilities—something the travel industry should continue to watch closely.
