Quintana Roo Forms New Tourism Board

The organization plans to strengthen smaller destinations and increase international awareness.

The state of Quintana Roo, comprising 11 of Mexico’s top destinations—including Cancún, the Mayan Riviera, and Playa del Carmen—launched the Quintana Roo Tourism Board (QRTB) in June. It aims to form an overarching promotion strategy for the entire Caribbean-Mexico region and to take success stories from the area’s most popular spots and apply them to up-and-coming ones, such as Isla Holbox.

The organization is already working to establish a call center to provide travel agencies with information on all the cities and towns in Quintana Roo. QRTB will also have an online press page with the latest news.

Quintana Roo’s tourism sector is set to grow. Darío Flota Ocampo, managing director of QRTB, told Travel Agent Central that he expects to end the year with 4,000 more hotel rooms and 20.9 million domestic and international tourists (according to Quintana Roo’s Annual Tourism Report, the state welcomed 16.9 million travelers in 2017).
