Scottish resort launches chef apprentice scheme

Luxury Scottish five-star resort Cameron House has launched a new Chef Apprenticeship Programme to provide high quality on-the-job training and hospitality qualifications for young people aged between 18 and 24.

The Cameron Chef Apprenticeship Programme will provide paid training to people based in the local area who are interested in pursuing a career in food service.

Over 18 months, young chefs will gain experience in the RCI-affiliated resort’s busy kitchens, including The Boat House, Café Spa and The Clubhouse to develop their skills in food preparation, food service, and health and safety.

Three young people currently working at Cameron House have already been recruited onto the programme.

Adam Neill, currently a kitchen porter, said: “I’ve always wanted to become a chef and when I saw this programme advertised internally, I just knew I needed to apply. To learn the basics from renowned chefs at one of Scotland’s top culinary destinations is a privilege and I can’t wait to get started.”

During their apprenticeship, the young chefs will be mentored by Gemma Arnott, who has been head chef of The Clubhouse at Cameron for more than five years.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to join the team and learn the ropes in the resort’s busy kitchens,” she said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to join the team and learn the ropes in the resort’s busy kitchens,” she said.

“We’ll support young chefs throughout the duration of their apprenticeship, helping them build confidence and pushing them to achieve professional standards in the hospitality industry.

“We’re a close-knit team and our apprentice chefs will have real responsibilities from day one. I’d encourage anyone with a love of food to apply.”

The resort is hoping to recruit a further three to six apprentices and is inviting passionate young people from the surrounding area to apply. No previous experience in hospitality is required, simply a positive, hard-working attitude and desire to learn.

Jennifer Jurgensen, director of Human Resources at Cameron House Resort, added: “Over the years we have provided various developmental opportunities for budding young chefs, however this is the first time we’ve pulled everything together to create a brand new, industry leading apprenticeship programme.

“We wanted to offer young chefs more than the basic hospitality qualifications, and once the initial entry level programme is completed chefs will be given the opportunity to apply for the advanced qualification, which teaches them how to lead teams and develop recipes and menus for our restaurants.”

The deadline for applications is 31 January 2020 and successful applicants will begin the programme in early March 2020. For more information email: careers@cameronhouse.co.uk
